iOS 5.1 Brings 4G To The AT&T iPhone4s Party???

After I updated the software on my iPhone, a strange thing happened.    When not connected to a WiFi network, my phone is showing 4G date capabilities.

Look in the status bar (upper left hand corner) of the picture.   You have signal strength, followed by AT&T stamp, followed by “4G” service label.

Interesting.   Time to investigate…

First, you won’t see this if you’re connected to WiFi.   WiFi trumps connecting to the network.

Second, it seems that this is showing up on only the iPhone 4S models AND only on the AT&T network.

Third, as I said in the opening paragraph, you must have the software update released yesterday.

MacWorld reports that in October of 2011, when the 4S came out, the phone’s 5.8Mbps upload/14.4Mbps download speeds matched what competitors were considering 4G speeds.  AT&T wanted to take advantage of this earlier, but Apple didn’t provide the opportunity in software updates until yesterday.

Your speed hasn’t actually changed since before the update.   The 4G label has more to do with marketing on AT&T’s part.

i101 Basics: Ignoring Calls

I just take for granted that people know this tip because I’ve known about it for so long it’s second nature to me.

Say you’re doing something and you just don’t feel like taking a call.   Maybe you’re at the PTO meeting and the principal is giving a presentation and you had forgotten to put your phone on mute.  Suddenly the phone rings at full volume and the ringtone you happen to have is Sir Mix Alot’s “Baby Got Back”.

Here’s how you handle it.

To silence the ringer, hit the “Sleep” button once.    Simple as that.   You can still answer the call if you need to.   You have about 8 seconds to swipe the answer button before call goes to voicemail.

If you’re sure you’re not going to take the call, you can immediately send the caller to your voicemail by quickly clicking the “Sleep” button twice.   Two little beeps will confirm that the call was declined.

At your convenience you can go into voicemail and retrieve your message.

Mc-iHelp Mobile

Update***

I’m using a new mobile app for the website.   It’s a bit of an improvement over the last app.    Be sure to check it out.   If you put an icon on your home screen, delete it and follow the instructions to add the new mc-ihelp icon.  Quick and easy to navigate, you’re sure to love the user interface.

***(original post from Jan7) I just added a plugin to the website called WPtouch.  The program makes the website appear on a mobile phone in a very nice looking format.

Open SAFARI and type in mc-ihelp.info

Check it out.   It looks good, if I do say so myself.

Now, here’s how to add a shortcut link to your Home Screen.   Read the rest of this entry »

2 Must Have Apps: Dragon Go and Dragon Dictation

You’re bummed because you don’t have Siri, eh?   I can understand where you’re coming from.   Siri is a great tool that comes with the iPhone 4S.

You’re not with out voice recognition software though, because Dragon Dictation is a FREE app available in the iTunes Store.   I’ve recommended it to many of you in the past.   Dragon Dictation allows you to speak in to your phone and instantly see your text or email messages.

You can also dictate status updates directly to your Social Networking applications (Facebook and Twitter) or send notes and reminders to yourself….all using your voice.      So when you’re on-the-go, stop typing and start speaking – from short text messages to longer email messages, and anything in between.

But wait there’s more… Earlier today, Dragon added another app to the iTunes Store.   It’s called Dragon Go!

With Nuance Dragon Go all you have to do is say what you want and Dragon Go will deliver your results within seconds.

Dragon Go is so smart it knows what you want simply by how you say it.  And it will deliver you directly to the best mobile sites offering what you want– such as Fandango for movie showtimes and trailers, Accuweather.com for local weather updates, Pandora internet radio, Yelp for local reviews, recommendations and more!   Very easy to use.   Like many apps, upon launch you have the option of going through a short tutorial.

Download them, play with them, and I’ll bet you’ll be putting both apps on your front page.

Set Up “Find My Phone”

I was just reading the weekly crime blotter and read about a phone stolen at the local high school. The police located it in a neighboring city using the devices GPS tracking. In this particular case the investigation is still open, but in recent weeks I’ve read numerous national press stories of iPhones being recovered using Find My Phone.

The first thing you’ve got to do is makes sure you’re device is running the iOS 5 software. Do this by going to SETTINGS > GENERAL > ABOUT > then scrolling down to VERSION. It should read 5.0.1.

If it doesn’t, you need to plug your phone into your computer and turn on iTunes. iTunes should recognize that your software is out of date. Click the “Update Software” and wait until it’s complete. Now, you need to turn on iCloud.

When you turn on a new iOS device or after you’ve completed the update to iOS 5, follow the onscreen instructions to activate your device and set up iCloud. If you skipped the setup process or want to change your iCloud settings, tap the Settings icon on the Home screen and select iCloud.

Now, go into SETTINGS > iCLOUD > and you’ll be presented with a screen that somewhat resembles the following. Toggle the FIND MY iPHONE to on.

The next time you can’t find your phone, or somebody phone jacks you, just log into iCloud.com and you’ll be able to locate your iOS 5 device to within a few feet of its location.

Backgrounds For Your iPhone Or iPod Touch

What do you have as the Locksreen and Homescreen wallpaper?

My lockscreen is currently a picture that I got from Sue.  It’s a picture of our kids from when we met up with them in Florida a year ago.    I change both the lockscreen and homescreen frequently and have accumulated many in the process.    You can check them out by clicking here, or use the link in the address bar at the top of the page.

New Apple TV In The Near Future?

So, we’re expecting a new iPad announcement soon, right?   That’s what we’re lead to believe from parts manufacturers that have been leaking pictures of parts that are supposedly for it.   There are also signs pointing to a new Apple TV.    Apple TV was readily available at Amazon, BestBuy and Walmart.   That doesn’t seem to be the case any longer.     In searching Bestbuy.com this morning, I could only locate a refurbished unit.   A new unit is not available.   Same goes for Amazon.

I absolutely love my Apple TV and use it often.  I think it’s one of Apple’s most under appreciated products.  Especially at $99.    One of the great things about it is the ability to stream music and movies from our iTunes libraries over Wifi right to our TV and the ability to display photo’s from you iPhoto library.

Another very cool feature is the ability to ‘mirror’ your iPod Touch(4), iPhone 4s and your iPad2.  Mirroring is the ability to push the content of your device up to the TV to be viewed.    So, playing Angry Birds on your iPhone is great, but playing it on your TV is fantastic.

The Apple TV has so many other capabilities including accessing the iTunes store to download a movie and watching YouTube videos – to name just a couple of features.

I’m very excited to see what a new Apple TV might consist of.    1080p is one thing I would expect seeing that it only covers 720p HD right now.  Time will tell.   I’m actually thinking it’ll drop at the March 7th event.    I’ll post more as I hear about it.

iPad 3 Rumor Update

March 7th is apparently going to be the day when Apple is planning on unveiling the iPad 3 to the world.

The new iPad is rumored to sport a display with four times the number of pixels as the current gen iPad, all crammed in to 9.7 inches. In addition, the device is also rumored to have a quad core ARM A6 processor and a greatly upgraded camera. In addition, rumors are suggesting that the new device will also sport LTE compatibility, making it the first Apple device to run on 4G networks.

There is also rumors floating around of the possibility of a smaller screen.   Maybe we’ll know on March 7th.
